Founded in 1963 by Pathology Professor Chen Ding-yao and Professor Huang De-xiu, TMU Rugby's earliest alumni included former TMU board member Lee Hung-hsin, along with Huang Po-cheng, Lee Shu-kuang, Peng Hung-chih, Su Wen-chang and Tsai Li-li. The team's red, white and black kit — representing passion, purity and perseverance — was unveiled at their first tournament, where they finished as runners-up. In 1966, national rugby star Lin Chen-tai joined the school as coach and led the team to five consecutive Junior College Division titles from 1968 through 1972; that same year the medical-technology squad was invited to tour Japanese pharmaceutical and dental universities.
By 1978, under the leadership of current Shuang-Ho Hospital Superintendent Wu Mai-si — alongside med-school alumni Tu Yuan-kun, Tseng Chao-lin, Wu Lieh-cheng, Chiang Feng-jen and others — TMU captured runner-up in both the 7-aside and 15-aside divisions of the National Collegiate Rugby Championships, cementing the team as one of TMU's most representative athletic programs and one of Taiwan's leading traditional rugby powerhouses.
In 2002, Lee Cheng-chi — a multi-year national team veteran and National Games gold medallist — joined the TMU Office of Physical Education, even passing up a chance to represent Taiwan at the Asian Olympics. Players like Tseng Kuo-chang immediately enlisted him as coach, and the team took third place at the 2003 Taipei City Youth Cup. Recruitment difficulties eventually forced the program to disband. In recent years, under Vice President Wu Mai-si's leadership, the school recruited Coach Yang Ming-da — a sports-science researcher and qualified rugby coach — in 2016 to lead the program's rebuild, with rugby now identified as a priority development sport for TMU.
As a medical university built on the ethos of caring for others as one's own, TMU centres everything it does on the benefit of the nation, society and the people. Through the development of our rugby program, we hope to advance Taiwanese rugby further and, by combining the school's resources to develop sports-medicine expertise, to make both the country and the school more internationally competitive.
